Adherence

The physical phenomenon which is manifested in the wheel-rail contact points and which allows the rolling, the transmission of the motor torque (thus, the generation of the traction force) as well as the action of the braking torque. The value of the shear stress thus generated to the wheel is proportional to the weight burden on the wheel multiplied by the coefficient of adhesion. The latter is also significantly variable as a function of several factors (train speed, humidity, leaves on the rail etc.) And does not allow the overcoming of the so-called limit of adhesion (of wheel slip condition). In critical condition adherence it can be increased through the application of sand on the track (sandboxes supplied locomotives). Tractionfeature
