Automatic Train Protection (ATP)

automatic protection system of the running of a train. The system checks that the instantaneous speed of the train    is less than the permissible speed at that instant. For permissible speed is the minimum speed the maximum speed allowed in respect of spacing constraints, the characteristics of the line and the train of temporary speed reductions for various causes. This system ensures compliance with strict indications, in case of active emergency braking system through pneumatic braking equipment. In the ATP system it is always present the traditional side signaling to which the engine driver must follow. The driver, in the context of this system, controls the starting taking into account only the information provided by traditional side signaling, those that derive what time of service and the various prescriptions. So the ATP does not require, as a rule, of a viewer of the advanced board type Man Machine Interface (MMI). See also Automatic Train Control (ATC)
