Automatic recognition system of the rolling stock number, based on a transponder installed on each vehicle and a ground receiving device. This automation, to be carried out at significant points in the network, is generally considered to be a fundamental requirement for improving the functioning of park management information systems. This has also given rise to UIC projects for the definition of international standards. The objective of the system is in practice not simple to be implemented, due to the need to install the aforementioned transponder on all the wagons that can circulate in Europe and to achieve a real standardization between the various networks and transport companies. More sophisticated systems can also allow the programmability of the same transponder, for the management of “variable” load data.
