CBTC

Communication-Based Train Control. Control and command of train circulation based on the communications in use in subways. CBTC is an automatic control system of rail traffic based on continuous communication between the trains on the line and computers located in a remote Central Station, where there are the operators responsible for train circulation. The System, which is described by IEEE 1474 standard, performs train detection by radio communication, with bidirectional data transmission, between computerized systems on the trains and the Central Post which knows the status of the lines and the position of all the trains present there. In this way, the Central Station automatically provides each train with a safe movement authorization (MA: Movement Authority) for the entire free stretch in front of the train. Computerized systems guarantee automatic protection (ATP), automatic operation functions (ATO) and automatic supervision (ATS) of trains. With CBTC is realized the Mobile Block, so the distance betweent rains is not fixed, but variable, being calculated dynamically, based on maximum operating speeds, braking curves and the position of trains in line. Moreover, in this way the capacity of the railway isincreased. It is evident the relevant analogy of the PTC system with the ERTMS standard, in which system safety is ensured, thanks to the cooperative interaction between on-board and tracksideequipment. The functions of the PTC system are part of those of ERTMS.
