Man Machine Interface

MMI. Man-machine interface, in particular referred to the on-board subsystem of the Automatic Train Control (ATC); programmable equipment with a security architecture of the single microprocessor type; itprocesses the data with two different Software programs that produce the result of the processing, whose concordance is continuously controlled by an external Hardware Fail-safe. The MMI, or dashboard, allows the dialogue between the driver and the on-board system and has various functions; it consists of a video display, LCD, and a series of keys for entering data and for operation: on / off system activation key, five keys to activate the function provided, three operating buttons for data entry, for resetting braking and for the operations of viewing the information, keypad for data entry and maintenance operations. The interface: – makes the presentation to the driver, on the aforementioned display, of all the data processed: real speed, braking distance, target speed (the one to be respected at a specific point on the line, deviated route start, slowdown start, etc. .); – allows drivers an easy guide showing the speed limits not to be exceeded; – is used at the start of the run to enter and modify the fixed parameters for the characterization of the train; – allows to set or modify maintenance data; – selects the operating status of the on-board subsystem and prepares the ATC operating speed; – shows the driver, with appropriate diagnostic messages, cases of malfunctioning of the ground or on-board subsystem. The MMI is a necessary condition for the realization of the operational Interoperability defined in the ERTMS system. The MMI is therefore realized according to a standard design, with a viewer and a set of commands, which do not depend on the specific network. In this way it solves the problem of the great variety of meanings and aspects of the different signaling systems existing in Europe
