Fundamental activity for the introduction in the railway circulation of technical-scientific developments of other engineering disciplines as well as for the application in the railway field of innovative solutions already introduced in other sectors. Research and development, which has general objectives of improving performance, safety, productivity and cost-effectiveness, can be achieved in various areas of activity that include: electronic and numerical techniques (for central equipment, spacing, secure data transmission), radio techniques and satellite, diagnostics, instrumental and measurement methods (e.g.laser), as well as software applications for the optimization of circulation or the reconversion of business processes (operational research methods, process redesign or re-engineering). The results of R&D must often be validated in the field with pilot projects and experimental applications, influencing developments also in the regulatory field. The volume of resources required may be such as to require joint investments between several countries or companies. The most important development program launched in the European railway sector is the ERTMS system, in addition to other projects participated by the European
