Marshalling yards

Sorting station. Station where freight trains arrive, composed of groups of uneven wagons by type and destination, in which they must be sorted and reassembled, and from which more homogeneously selected and ordered wagon trains depart, for common destinations. The system consists of a set of track beams, connected to each other and each having specific functions. The two main beams are the arrival beam and the direction beam; they are generally arranged in series and connected by hump in gravity. The marshalling yards can be made flat or, more often, work “by gravity”; in this last case they can be continuous inclined or have a donkey saddle between the arrival and direction bundles, so-called “hump in gravity”. The suitable approach of the wagons on the directional tracks can be obtained: with the method of target shooting (in French “tire au but”), whereby the speed is regulated with braking systems so that the wagons can reach the final approach; with approaching drivers, realized through appropriate dragging systems
