Systems engineering. Methodological approach for the development of systems aimed at considering the entire life cycle, based on the integration of different disciplines typical of engineering and other fields. In this perspective, the objectives of economic efficiency and effectiveness (performance) that the systems require as well as the characteristics of man and the environment (constraints of different nature) with which they relate are relevant. The life cycle of a system includes all the different phases that make up its history (conception, specifications of requirements, design, implementation, entry and use in operation, disposal). Typical knowledge involved, in addition to those specific to engineering, concern in particular: RAMS, Quality, Ergonomics, Operational research, project management, life cycle costs (LCC, Life cycle cost). The railway system and its components are typical areas of intervention of systems engineering
